F1 legend Michael Schumacher is gradually being brought out of an induced coma following last month's skiing accident, his manager has confirmed.
Rumours have swirled since the start of the week that Schumacher was being eased out of his medically-induced coma at the Grenoble Hospital in southern France and Thursday's official confirmation is bound to be interpreted as a positive development by the German's legions of supporters.
In a statement released on behalf of Schumacher's family, the seven-times World Champion's manager Sabine Kehm declared:
'The family of Michael Schumacher is again requesting to respect its privacy and the medical secret, and to not disturb the doctors treating Michael in their work. At the same time, the family wishes to express sincere appreciation for theworld wide sympathy.
'Michael's sedation is being reduced in order to allow the start of the waking up process which may take long time. For the protection of the family, it was originally agreed by the interested parties to communicate this information only once this process was consolidated.'
It is the first official update that has confirmed a change in Schumacher's condition since the first week of January when he was described 'as stable'.
The German has been in a coma for over a month after suffering a severe head injury whilst skiing at the end of December.
How ironic is life... he drives (and crashes) at very dangerous speeds through many years and when he finally retires this happens. At least no one can say he didn't live his life to the fullest
Everyday that goes by without positive news since the announcement that the doctors were lightening the sedation makes me nervous for his long term prognosis
According to some German newspapers Felipe visit Michael last week. And according to the BILD Michael had a pneumonia last week. His speaker don´t comment this. The and needs to go on.
I personally think Michael having a Pneumonia could be a good thing in the current situation. I was really hoping to hear something that gave a good explanation as to why he wasn't responding despite sedation being lightened about 2 weeks ago. A pneumonia can be fixed and is a good explanation for altered mental status. Hopefully the antibiotics work quickly and we start to finally hear news that he is responding appropriately.
