quotePat Fry says James Allison will boost Ferrari's 2014 title chances By Jonathan Noble and Pablo Elizalde Saturday, December 14th 2013, 10:09 GMT
Ferrari technical director Pat Fry says the arrival of James Allison will be a huge boost for the Italian squad's 2014 Formula 1 prospects.
Allison left his post as Lotus technical director earlier this year, and started work at the Maranello team in September.
The Briton was named Ferrari's chassis technical director.
Fry feels Allison's contribution will be especially significant because of the regulation changes set to be introduced next year.
Fry said: "It is great having James here. There has been a huge amount of work to try to move the place on and move the place forward.
"We have been attacking every area, everything from updating the windtunnel to the simulator, so there has been a massive amount of work to do.
"It is good to have the load shared. And particularly coming into next year [with] the 2014 rule-change and everything, so the more bright brains you have thinking of things the better we should do, hopefully.
"It is a fairly and easy split between us - we are both sensible and it works very well."
Fry also defended the need to hire more technical chiefs as he feels the workload is better spread that way, especially when the regulations become more complicated.
"I think you need a few," he added. "Two is good - whether you need five I am not sure.
"To some degree, as Formula 1 gets more and more complicated, the devil ends up being in the detail.
"So you do need to get into every last little bit and then you have to drive a team of people to do that for you.
"Splitting it is quite sensible, to be honest, but it is [still] a massive task."
I try to translate this. Do they say that Kimi will do simulator work too? Finnish and google.translate are no friends. Apple, maybe you can help?
quoteAlonso kokeili ensi vuoden Ferraria simulaattorissa F1 | Turun Sanomat 14.12.2013 17:42
Fernando Alonso ajoi perjantaina Maranellon tehtaalla simulaattorissa Ferrarin ensi vuoden F1-autoa. Kimi Räikkönen aloittaa italialaistiimissä virallisesti 1. tammikuuta ja myös suomalaistähden uskotaan tekevän tuttavuutta uusille säännöille rakennettuun uuteen autoon ensin simulaattorilla, vaikka Kimi tunnetusti niitä karttaakin.
– Olen tyytyväinen siihen, miten päivä simulaattorissa meni, Alonso kiitteli www.ferrari.com -sivustolla.
Tarkoitus oli tutustuttaa kuljettaja niihin uusiin menetelmiin, mitä on hallittava ensi vuoden autossa. .....
Marko Pietari It says: "Kimi will start in Ferrari officially on January the first and also the Finnish star is expected to drive with the new car made to fill the new rules first with the simulator although Kimi is known for avoiding them."
Maranello, 16 December – James Allison’s first term as technical director of Scuderia Ferrari is coming to a close. However, unlike school, there are no report cards to be awaited with trepidation, although it’s still a good opportunity to have a quick chat with James and get his first impressions at the start of what is his second stint at Ferrari, coming at a time that is particularly challenging for all Formula 1 engineers.
“I definitely haven’t spent time going into the details of the design of the new car, as it wouldn’t make any sense at this stage,” James told www.ferrari.com. “Rather, I concentrated on trying to direct adequate resources and on putting the best people in the right places to optimise attention to detail. Actually, when you tackle a regulation change like this one, it’s not something you only start thinking about six months beforehand. When I arrived in Maranello, work on the project had been on going for two years. I tried to immerse myself in its philosophy and adapt to the team as quickly as possible. Having said that, what you could call my active role in the design of the car involves working identifying the areas on which maybe we should push harder and concentrate more effort.”
As from 2014, the engine will once again play an important role in establishing a hierarchy among the teams, as was the case up until 2006. “It’s true that the influence of the power unit on overall performance of the car will be much greater than in the recent past,” continued the engineer from Lincolnshire. “From when, in 2007, the freeze on engine development took hold and performance levels converged, it’s clear that its influence on the pecking order got ever smaller, while aerodynamics grew in importance. In the years leading up to that point, that wasn’t the case: I can well remember how important the engine was in terms of Ferrari’s successes in the first half of the Noughties. Now we will witness a re-balancing, although aerodynamics will still be a key factor.”
In fact on this front, Ferrari has invested heavily in terms of manpower and technical resources, as Allison recognises. “Aerodynamics remains the lifeblood of a modern Formula 1 car,” he explains. “It’s impossible to be competitive without having the right tools and adequate resources: now we can say we have moved on from being maybe the fourth or fifth team in terms of the tools we have, to once again being at the cutting edge and everything is in place to open up a new Ferrari era.”
#F1 @InsideFerrari Antonio Spagnolo will be the new Kimi Raikkonen race engineer, Pat Fry will take on the role of coordinator in the pits
source is Turrini, he is having fun that Kimi gets a Spaniard. (he is Italian but Spagnolo means Spaniard/Spanish) interesting about Fry. he also writes that Rivola might get another role
